IDW Comic Characters in Future sonic Games

Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega’s iconic video game franchise, has captivated players for decades. From its early days as a pixelated speedster to the modern 3D adventures, Sonic’s blue blur has left an indelible mark on gaming culture. But beyond the games, there’s a rich tapestry of Sonic lore that extends into other media—comics, cartoons, and more.

On July 21, 2017, IDW Publishing—a powerhouse known for Transformers, G.I. Joe, Star Trek, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—announced a groundbreaking deal with Sega. Their mission? To breathe new life into the Sonic comic universe after Archie Comics’ 24-year run came to an end. The result? A fresh series of Sonic comics with vibrant artwork, compelling storylines, and a cast of exciting original characters.

Archie Sonic writer Ian Flynn stepped up as the lead writer for IDW’s Sonic series, accompanied by artist Tyson Hesse. Flynn made it clear: IDW Sonic was a brand-new continuity, unshackled from Archie’s legacy. This clean slate allowed for creative freedom, and fans eagerly anticipated the reintroduction of beloved characters.

In January 2018, IDW dropped a tantalizing hint: characters from both the games and the original comics might return. Tracy Yardley, who had previously worked on Archie’s Sonic comics, joined the team as one of the pencillers. The stage was set for a grand reunion—a fusion of classic and fresh faces.

Fast-forward to the present. Evan Stanley, an artist from the series, took pen to paper and introduced two original characters: Tangle the Lemur and Whisper the Wolf. These dynamic additions quickly won fans’ hearts. But their journey didn’t stop at the comic panels—they leaped into action in the mobile game Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. Next month, Surge the Tenrec would join the fray, adding even more diversity to the roster.

And here’s the kicker: Chris Hernandez, the Lore Manager, confirmed that the comics were canon to the games. Suddenly, the IDW universe wasn’t just ink on paper—it was woven into the fabric of Sonic’s multiverse.

In merging the comic book universes with the games, Sega would celebrate Sonic’s legacy while charting new territory. Fans would revel in nostalgia, and newcomers would discover a universe teeming with possibilities.
